HP Innovation Journal Issue 13: Winter 2019 | Page 5

WELCOME As Heraclitus once said, “The only thing that is constant is change.” I cannot think of a truer statement as we live and work in a world that is in a state of continuous transformation. Advance- ments in technology, changing customer and employee expectations, and a growing need for sustainable impact are all pushing us to reimagine and reinvent faster than ever before. From the office to the manu- facturing line, the retail storefront or the hotel lobby, digital transformation is rapidly changing the fabric of the world around us. At HP, we embrace change and the opportu- nities it presents us. We are always looking to improve and empower the world around us through innovation and foresight. To do that, we must continuously evolve and transform, from how we work, to how we are organized, to how we innovate. Our new CEO, Enrique Lores, shares his vision to advance, disrupt and transform HP in order to create greater value for our customers, partners and employees. Christoph Schell, HP’s first chief commercial officer, discusses how our own operational transformation will drive more seamless integration and alignment across many aspects of the cus- tomer journey. Also in this issue, Angela Salmeron and Andrew Buss from the International Data Corporation explore the reimagined work- place, no longer defined by physical offices or experiences, but by an “anywhere and everywhere” way of working. Salmeron and Buss convey why we are becoming less place-dependent and time-bound, and instead adopting a workstyle that mixes physical, digital, and immersive experiences and technologies. Their article is a look inside our modern, mobile-first world, and its effect on workspaces. The office is not only changing in a phys- ical sense but also as a result of changing employee demographics and expectations. In the article “The Workforce of Tomor- row,” we take a closer look at how our next generation of employees, Generation Z, is transforming workplace values, motiva- tions, and workstyles. Enjoying greater freedom and autonomy than their predeces- sors, Generation Z is increasingly working remotely, with flexibility and work-life har- mony enabled by technology. Beyond the office, this issue explores the role digital technology plays in the trans- formation of industrial businesses as they grapple with disruption and increasing pres- sures to improve productivity. We’ll also look at how technology is leading to more personalized and convenient retail and hos- pitality customer experiences. To achieve this level of transformation, businesses of all sizes are racing to meet their customers where they are, and to speak their digital language of choice. My colleague Kim Rivera, president of strategy and business management, shares how HP is building a coher- ent, connected digital capability to achieve the speed and deliver the experience HP’s customers, part- ners, and employees expect. We are standing at the preci- pice of fundamental change and opportunity. With digital trans- formation delivering a powerful competitive advantage for those organizations that harness the potential to enhance their customer, partner, and employee experiences. Let’s embrace change and create the future together. SHANE WALL Chief Technology Officer and Global Head of HP Labs 3
