Are there any objects in your office or on your desk that have special significance ? I love Japanese traditional pottery called Karatsu ware . When I go on vacation , I visit the craftspeople to hear their stories and always buy a piece for myself . Every morning I choose a cup from a different artisan for the tea I drink during work . I also have a lot of Boston Celtic jerseys in my office . When I was little , I played basketball and loved to watch
NBA games , especially the Celtics — I love the community and the team ’ s history .
When working from home it can be hard to turn off . How do you “ leave ” work ? I set a timer that goes off like a school bell . My husband or I make an announcement and say , “ It ’ s time to stop work , grab a beer , and head to the living room to watch today ’ s baseball game .” The announcement is different every day , so we enjoy stopping work !
As hybrid is our way of working for now , what do you look forward to when you and members of your team meet in person ? Having a workshop or brainstorming session is more exciting when we have it in person with my team . We usually meet in the HP office , but occasionally meet for a barbecue , which is really fun . Hopefully we can do that again soon . — Interview by Sunshine Flint
HP-01 First described as a “ wrist instrument ,” the HP-01 was a precursor to today ’ s smartwatches . It was a wristwatch , calendar , and small algebraic calculator all in one . Often referred to as Cricket , the device also featured an alarm , stopwatch , and timer . And it introduced the idea of a stylus , having one that snapped into the watchband for pushing tiny buttons and another that doubled as a ballpoint pen .
