THE ROLE BUSINESS must play in society has never been greater . A growing number of our customers , employees , and shareholders expect us to think beyond our bottom line and take an active role in being a force for good . At HP , this mindset guides everything we do — including continuously pushing ourselves to do more . That ’ s why our ambition is to become the world ’ s most sustainable and just technology company .
Achieving this won ’ t be easy — particularly as we navigate a seemingly constant barrage of global challenges . From the pandemic , to the war in Ukraine , to the accelerating climate crisis that threatens our planet , humanity is experiencing seemingly unprecedented disruption .
What distinguishes this moment is not only the nature or number of challenges but also the privileged role companies like ours have in helping to solve them . Our stakeholders expect us to work closely with governments , civil society , and other partners on behalf of solutions that benefit everyone . And our employees are committed to being a force for good .
As every HP employee knows , pursuing both purpose and profit has been a guiding principle of HP since our earliest days . Integrating sustainability into what we do is not a choice , it ’ s an imperative , and the result of our goal setting means that customer and consumer purchasing decisions are being influenced by our efforts in these areas . HP ’ s commitment to sustainable impact helped the company win over $ 3.5 billion in new sales in fiscal year 2021 .
In this issue of Innovation , we spotlight some of the groundbreaking ways we are moving the needle forward in everything we do , from our employee volunteers to supply chain partnerships to next-gen product design . Chief Sustainability Officer James McCall writes about how we are empowering suppliers with climate action workshops — part of our strategy to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across our entire value chain by 2040 , from our operations to our products to our global suppliers , while Ampily Vijay , Global Head of Digital Strategy & Solutions , talks about how real-time insights and data help anticipate customers ’ needs . Stacy Wolff at the Design Studio explains the evolution of sustainable PS design , and we dig into HP ’ s other sustainability commitments , from responsible reforestation to educating girls and combating climate change . Finally , we highlight the extraordinary work of HP employees to support Ukrainian refugees in their hour of need .
I learned a lot from these stories , and I know you will , too . Hopefully they will allow you to reflect on your own day-to-day roles and contributions and inspire you to speak up when you have ideas to help us navigate today ’ s global challenges . After all , one thoughtful idea has the power to change the world , and there ’ s no reason why it can ’ t be yours !
Saludos ,
