CUSTOMERS NO LONGER just expect brands to provide them with the right products and services . They also want to trust that brands will do the right things . That ’ s because they understand that the solutions to the world ’ s problems — from a pandemic that is still ongoing to a climate that will only get hotter and more volatile — need to come from all corners of society , including the business community .
Meanwhile , shareholders and investors are increasingly evaluating environmental , social , and corporate governance criteria just as closely as traditional financial metrics before making investment decisions — because they understand that sustainability is the best way to position a business for growth over the long term .
Ultimately , the most successful companies will be those that find innovative ways to create the breakthroughs and partnerships that pave the way for progress and improve the lives of people everywhere . That ’ s what we ’ ve been doing at HP from the start — when our founders , Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard , recognized that doing good and doing well go hand in hand .
Today , we are carrying this legacy forward — and our scale provides us with a powerful platform to make a big impact . We ship three devices every second , operate in 180 countries worldwide , and work with hundreds of thousands of partners . When we make even seemingly small changes and we apply them up and down our supply chain , we can set in motion significant progress that ripples across the globe . And that ’ s exactly what we ’ re doing today . In the process , we ’ re also driving long-term differentiation and growth .
For example , our Elite Dragonfly laptop , made with diverted oceanbound plastic , is one of our top sellers . It ’ s evidence that embracing sustainability can not only unlock innovation but also help drive sales , too . And in 2020 , for the second consecutive year , HP ’ s Sustainable Impact programs contributed to more than $ 1 billion in new business .
All of this inspired us , in part , to evolve our mission at HP , which is simple : Create technology that inspires ambitious and meaningful progress . It reflects our new vision of a world where ordinary people work hard to deliver extraordinary innovations that benefit society .
In this issue , we dive into the urgency of sustainability for all companies , as well as HP ’ s 2030 Sustainable Impact goals . In particular , we focus on climate action , human rights , and digital equity . This includes profiles of three remarkable women working to make digital equity a reality for their communities ; a look at why hybrid work could be a key to sustainability in the office ; and an interview with icon Jane Goodall , whom we are proudly partnering with in her Trees for Jane initiative .
To overcome the challenges we face , we all must do our part . And for companies like ours , inaction is inexcusable . By harnessing the same qualities that have long made our business successful — innovation , discipline , focus , purpose — we can change people ’ s lives , and change the world .
By embracing this moment and committing to real change , we will not only help solve some of society ’ s most pressing challenges — we ’ ll also build a stronger HP at the same time .
